With hot sun beating down on us and temperatures soaring to 45 degrees Celsius in North India, it is quite imperative to have a routine to take care of your skin during summer. Summer routine is different from winters, mostly because your skin type changes from dry to normal or even oily at times. So along with your wardrobe, you should change your skin care products too. You are also more prone to sweat more leading to increased incidence of fungal infections and miliaria, commonly known as prickly heat.
To combat the effects of sun and pollution on our skin, you should wash your face 2-3 times daily. Anymore and it will dry out your skin which in turn will lead to compensatory increased oil production. Use a mild face wash, unless you have acne or oily skin, in case of which you can use a salicylic acid based face wash. A common perception is that we do not need moisturiser in summers, but that’s not true! Air conditioners are so rampant these days and they do make your skin dry, so use of moisturiser is recommended. Consult your Dermatologist to get a light moisturiser recommended. Usage of a broad spectrum sunscreen is mandatory and it should be applied several times a day. Your sunscreen should be water proof as well if you’re planning to go swimming in the day. Do not forget to apply a lip balm which has SPF on your lips.
Drink lots of water and drinks like nimbu paani, coconut water and buttermilk. Try and eat more of fibre rich diet to combat the effects of heat stroke. Vitamin C based foods are good to keep you fresh and healthy. Do take bath twice a day, taking care of rinsing and drying yourself thoroughly after bath. Wear cotton clothes which let your sweat evaporate quickly.
With these tips, you will have a skin which will be worthy of envy. Happy Summers!
